Summary

SyncRoom is built for watching together without taking over the video. It never downloads, proxies, extracts, or re-hosts video streams, and it does not upload your browsing history. It only shares the active room video identity, playback state, and voice connection signals needed to keep a room in sync.

What SyncRoom collects

  • An anonymous member ID generated when you use the extension (no email, password, or account required).
  • The active room ID and your role in it (host/owner or follower).
  • A stable video identity for the page you open the extension on (for example, a YouTube video ID or Bilibili BV/episode identifier), used only to detect video mismatches.
  • Playback state you or the host generate: playing/paused, position, and speed.
  • Temporary WebRTC signaling data required to establish voice chat connections.

What SyncRoom does not collect

  • SyncRoom does not upload your general browsing history.
  • SyncRoom does not upload, download, proxy, extract, or re-host video streams or files.
  • SyncRoom does not record, store, or upload your voice chat audio.
  • SyncRoom does not require an email, phone number, or password to use.

Playback sync data

When you host a room, SyncRoom shares your play/pause, seek, and speed changes with room members so they can follow along. When you follow, your browser applies the host's state automatically. Followers cannot write playback changes back to the room.

Voice chat and microphone

Your microphone is only accessed after you explicitly click Join Voice Chat. Voice audio travels directly between participants over peer-to-peer WebRTC connections; SyncRoom does not route, record, or store this audio. Temporary signaling data (used only to help participants connect) passes through Supabase Realtime and is not persisted.

Local browser storage

SyncRoom stores your current room state and a local history of recently visited rooms in your browser's local storage, so you can rejoin or clean up old rooms. This data stays on your device and is not uploaded.

Room data storage

Active room membership and playback state are stored temporarily so the room can function while it is active. Room and membership records are removed when a room ends or is deleted.

Platform-respecting boundaries

SyncRoom acts only as a synchronization layer on top of the original video page. It does not bypass paywalls, region restrictions, age gates, or DRM, and it does not remove ads or alter the platform's own page in ways that circumvent platform policy.

Data retention

Room and playback state are retained only while a room is active and are removed when the room ends or is deleted. Locally stored recent-room history remains on your device until you clear it or uninstall the extension.

Your choices

  • You can leave a room or stop voice chat at any time.
  • You can clear your recent-room history from the extension popup.
  • You can revoke microphone permission at any time from your browser's site settings.
  • You can uninstall the extension at any time to remove all local data.
